Extraordinary Families (EF) is a leading child welfare organization whose mission is to help children and youth in foster care to have the childhoods and futures they rightfully deserve. Since 1994, we have become a leader in foster care and adoption in Los Angeles, joining thousands of children, youth, and families. Our work consists of four primary efforts along a continuum of care: 1) secure resource (foster) parents and a home for children entering the welfare system, 2) joining children and families through adoption, 3) supporting young adults with trauma and child welfare system histories as they transition to adulthood and 4) advocacy and public policy. SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES

The Communications Specialist works within a team-oriented and fast-paced work environment. The team is a talented, creative and driven group of people focused on furthering the mission and values of the agency. An integral member of the Development team, this position plays a significant role in the implementation of our communications strategies and is the primary writer and visual storyteller for the agency and its participants. The Communications Specialist communicates the impact and needs of the organization to external stakeholders with compelling and consistent messaging across print, digital, and social media. In addition to specific duties, this position works in collaboration with the Director of Philanthropy and Community Relations to ensure communications are in sync with, and help support, the programs department and agency initiatives, such as special events and media relations.

SPECIFIC DUTIES

  • Implement key messages of the agency, effectively telling the story of EF to diverse audiences, both internal and external. Increase visibility of the agency and convey the importance of its mission, vision, and programs to the community as well as other leaders in the industry;
  • Create and manage in-house print and digital collateral and ensure consistent messaging and branding is used to create momentum, increase awareness, and engage donors and other stakeholders in the work of EF. In-house print and digital content includes but is not limited to: electronic newsletters, email blasts, donor appeals, social media posts, press releases, annual reports, special event signage, brochures, and other organizational collateral. Work in collaboration with Director of Philanthropy and Community Relations to create materials and capture the vision of the organization in all communication platforms;
  • Manage website content and ongoing content maintenance, ensuring periodic updates and page overhauls, as needed. Work in collaboration with Director of Philanthropy and Community Relations to evaluate the efficacy of communication tools by tracking engagement metrics, feedback and responses from digital campaigns and the agency’s website;
  • Support annual and special events in partnership with the Director of Philanthropy and Community Relations, collaboratively working with Program management to identify, catalogue, and pitch compelling participant success stories and other engaging content, with a keen understanding of what compels and attracts different target audiences - e.g., donors, press, and volunteers. Produce and design various forms of collateral for events. Work in collaboration with Director of Philanthropy and Community Relations to coordinate red carpet and press for special events and support public relation efforts led by outside vendors;
  • Perform additional tasks and projects as directed by the Director of Philanthropy and Community Relations.

 MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

 KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS: 

  • Strong knowledge of issues related to foster care, adoption and/or youth services
  • Able to work with diverse population and persons with high acuity
  • Proficient in key design programs such as Adobe Suite, LucidPress, and Photoshop is highly desired
  • Demonstrated success in digital marketing and social media management (e.g. Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, YouTube, Instagram) with experience utilizing email marketing platforms (e.g. Constant Contact) is also required
  • Strong knowledge of communications strategies and media relations, including print, web, digital, social media and other e-communication/interactive tools
  • Excellent interpersonal communication, with the ability to communicate across departments and hierarchal structures
  • Excellent written and editing skills, with the ability to captivate, build and maintain relationships with corporate, community, elected, and VIP donors and supporters
  • Strong project management and work planning skills
  • Able to multi-task the execution and oversight of simultaneous activities and events
  • Sound decision-making capability
  • Knowledge of communications strategies in a nonprofit organization, including the integration of fundraising best practices
  • Maintain and execute confidential information according to HIPAA standards
  • Obtain and maintain CPR/First Aid Certification
  • Able to pass post offer Tuberculosis (TB) and health clearances
  • Travel is required approximately 10% of the time
  • Must have and maintain a valid California Driver’s License and insurance

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Position requires a Bachelor’s degree in communications, digital design, public relations, marketing or related field
  • Experience in writing and editing, digital communications, social media campaigns, website design and development, drip campaign development and implementation preferred
  • Experience with video production and editing is preferred
  • Experience in web design and development with basic knowledge of CSS and HTML preferred

EMPLOYMENT CLASSIFICATION

FLSA STATUS:                Non-Exempt
PAYROLL STATUS:       Hourly ($23-$28/hour depending on experience)
WORK SCHEDULE:      Part-time (20-30/hour a week)
